Virtual guarding

Remote operator monitoring, video analytics and immediate response – with no guard on site.

Not every site needs a guard. Every site needs attention.

There are locations where permanent presence simply does not pay off: a yard that closes at night, an empty compound at weekends, a seasonal depot, a distant warehouse. The cost of guarding is disproportionate there – but the risk remains.

Virtual guarding solves this: cameras and analytics watch the area, a live operator verifies events, and we intervene with an audio warning or a response unit when needed. Deterrence is immediate and reaction time is measurable.

Virtual guarding

  1. 01

We divide the area into zones

Where entry is possible, where valuables are stored, where a virtual line is needed and where motion detection is enough.

  2. 02

    We configure the analytics

The system reports only genuine events: human movement, line crossings, a vehicle left behind.

  3. 03

    An operator verifies

The alert reaches the control room, where the operator watches live what is happening.

  4. 04

    We intervene immediately

An audio warning on site, an alarm or a dispatch – according to the seriousness of the situation.

What does the service include?

  • Camera system and analytics across the whole zone
  • Audio warning speakers at critical points
  • 24/7 or scheduled operator monitoring
  • Response service in case of an alarm
  • A written record and images for every event
  • Monthly summary for the client

What can you expect?

Guarding without on-site headcount

Nights and weekends stay supervised without a permanent guard.

Instant deterrence

An audio warning makes most opportunistic intruders leave straight away.

Measurable response time

Every event is time-stamped – the speed of intervention can be held to account.

Frequently asked questions

01 Who watches the cameras, and when?

Virtual guarding does not necessarily require continuous human observation of the camera images. Properly configured video analytics can detect defined events – for example a line crossing or entry into a protected zone – and send an alert to the monitoring centre. Camera images are handled, and access to them is granted, according to the data-processing rules of the site concerned.

02 What happens if someone enters the protected area?

If the system detects an event that matches the configured rules, an alert may reach the monitoring centre. The operator can verify the event according to the predefined response procedure. The outcome may be, for example, an on-site audio or light warning, notification of the contact person, dispatch of a response unit or, where justified, a request for assistance from the authorities.

03 Is every site suitable for virtual guarding?

No. The layout of the site, its lighting, the placement of cameras, vegetation, fencing, traffic, network connectivity and many other factors can affect how the system performs. That is why we recommend virtual guarding on the basis of a prior technical and security survey.

04 Can virtual guarding fully replace the security guard?

On some sites or in some periods, yes; elsewhere only in part. Where regular in-person administration, receiving visitors, access control or on-site decisions are needed, a hybrid solution is typically more appropriate. The right model is always determined by the risks and operation of the site concerned.

05 How can false alarms be reduced?

Properly configured video analytics can, in certain cases, distinguish between people, vehicles and other movements. The aim is that primarily events relevant to security reach the operator. However, the complete exclusion of false alerts cannot be guaranteed for a technical system.

06 Can our existing camera system be used?

In many cases, yes. We examine the type, field of view, image quality and night performance of the cameras, the recorder, the network and the available analytics functions. Before the service starts we also settle the data-processing conditions where necessary.

07 What happens in the event of an internet or equipment failure?

When designing the system we take operational reliability and the communication links into account. The status of certain devices and connections can be monitored, so some technical faults or communication outages can be detected. Backup solutions and the response procedure for such events are determined on the basis of the site's risks.

08 Is virtual guarding cheaper than manned guarding?

In many cases it can reduce the cost of continuous on-site manned presence. The actual saving depends on which periods and tasks can be covered safely with technological support. The aim is not a cheaper service as such, but maintaining the required level of security more efficiently.

Data-protection note

The precise design of camera, access-control and other solutions that involve the processing of personal data is always aligned with the operation of the site concerned, the purpose of the processing and the applicable data-protection requirements. Where DERIK acts as a processor in the course of the service, the terms are laid down in a separate data-processing agreement.
